Tonga and Easter

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

My husband and I are seeing if we can pull off a cheap-ish Easter break. Flights to Tonga from Sydney are doable, however we'd be landing late Thursday night and flying back on Monday. Is it worth going over for 3 full days? We're just after a quick adventure, but from what I have read, visitors are best getting off the main island straight away. Do you think ferries/flights would be running on Good Friday? And if so, do you recommend travelling by boat or plane? Don't really care where we go, but somewhere with a nice beach would be perfect.
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't expect pretty much anything besides churches to operate in Tonga during a Christian holiday! ;-)

While the main island of Tongatapu often gets poor reviews from visitors, I think it is actually quite interesting with lots of historic and natural attractions - certainly enough to fill 3 days. Just be prepared that it's flat and mostly covered in plantations. You should find OK beaches on both Tongatapu itself and on the small islets just off the coast and readily accessible from the capital (several even during holidays as they host resorts).

I wouldn't plan to go to more remote islands with so little time.

You might find Fiji or Vanuatu a shorter flight, and more likely to cater to tourists over that period. They are both closer to Sydney and much bigger countries geographically.

No and I don't recommend the place for the amount of time you have.

Tonga is lousy with religion and not designed to accommodate the needs of international visitors.

Charming in it's own way but frustrating for one such as yourself.

Thanks everyone - it looks like we'll leave it to a later date and just stay in Sydney for Easter. #2 yes, Fiji and Vanuatu are closers, but we've been to both already. And Samoa. Just looking for something a little different.
