Tonga Whale boats

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

We are going to Tonga in late July and plan to go diving with whales (snorkling I guess). I understand only 4 people are allowed in the water at a time but the boats take out varying number of passengers. Which companies and which areas are best for spending the most time with whales vs hopping up and down in frustration in the boat? :)

Tonga is a beautiful place to visit. Don't know much about the whale watching season but you can enrich your Polynesian experience before you go by enjoying the podcasts.

Hi,

The best place to whalewatch is Vava'u, if you look for it on the Thorn Tree you will find several threads with feedbacks on several companies.

I think "the best place" really depends on what you expect from your experience. It is true that there are more whale watch operators in Vava'u and it gets a lot more promotion. The difference in Ha'apai is that there are only two operators (compared to 18 in Vava'u), so there is no queueing up for the whales, which gives you increased chances for swimming and the whales enough time to relax.

Relaxed whales is good!
