Tonga whilst pregnant?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga
Hi Can anybody tell me about the food / water / general hygiene in Tonga? Normally these things don't worry me but I had Giardia earlier this year and am keen not to repeat that with a baby on board! I will be about 5 months pregnant when we travel. thanks
It's kind of middle of the road. Not third world, closer to western stuff in those areas. But I'd probably drink bottled water to be safe. Fruits and veggies are usually OK. | 1
Raro is right - although I do know someone who caught giarrdia there. Your biggest concern is lack of medical care off the main island. I would suspect you would be flown quickly down to Tongatapu if something happened, but maybe go with good travel insurance and at least make sure you are 100% healthy before going. Of course this is no guarantee with pregnancy but Tonga isn't really that risky to not go. | 2
The only bottled water I saw in Tonga was from Fiji-not cheap but delicious stuff. Food was generally unexciting but well cooked. | 3
I drank a lot of Bottled water. the pure stuff from Royal Beer. | 4
I found Tonga very expensive for what you get and the food terrible. Go elsewhere! | 5
#5, what rubbish. Seafood is cheap and plentiful, and the lobster to die for. A full lobster and a glass of wine for AUD$12 is bloody cheap. Meat pies for TOP$1.80. The Island night at the Dateline was TOP$25 (AUD$15.65, USD$13.57). For that you got all the buffet food you could eat (Western, Chinese, Tongan), and a 9 person cultural show. A lot of grocery stuff such as cornflakes will be a little dearer than at home, AS IS ANYTHING IMPORTED. Tonga is an Island nation and everything comes in on the boat. #5 is well off the mark. | 6
OK I just tried to send a PM to #5, but surprise, surprise, it doesn't accept PM's, so I'll post it here. I said: "care to elaborate?, because you are so off the mark it isn't funny." | 7
Restaurants catering to the tourist trade were fair value generally, what Tongans eat is generally fatty starchy crud. | 8
Anyone know if the Molisi Supermarket is back up and running? If so, I found it pretty reasonable. Good locally-made yogurt also. | 9
and #8 doesn't really know, either, OP. | 10
Just a vote here for Harry Mudd. Some of the food Tongans eat is delicious. Some of it is fatty and not to my taste but I have eaten some delicious fresh seafood (although not a great idea while pregnant) and even some fantastic corned beef dishes (what is that one with the taro leaves and coconut cream?). | 11
