Traveling around South Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

I am just starting to look into this as i will be in australia in january and i could have between 3 or 4 weeks to spare in February so i would love to visit some south pacific islands.

how do you travel between them? boats? just flying? which ones would you visit if it's just 3 or 4 weeks in total?

Hi,

You have made the right choice.

A century ago you would have experienced the Tongan Kalias which were large traditional speed boats but unfortunately we can fly around the Pacific.

From Australia you can get the Pacific Blue Flight to Tonga which is on Mondays and Thursdays ( 3.5 hr flight ).
From Tonga you fly to Fiji(1.5 hrs) everyday except Thursday and Sundays on Airpacific.
Also you can catch an Air NZ flight to Apia - Samoa (approx 2 hrs ) on a Tuesday from Tonga.

Just spent 10 days chilling out in Ha'apai, Tonga. For 3-4 weeks travel it depends what you want to do - are you looking for fun and adventure, cultural experience or just to see some awesome crystal blue waters? If it's the latter, I can recommend Tonga. Avoid spending too much precious time in Nuku'alofa (the capital), but definitely head north to Ha'apai. Matofonua Lodge is at the northern end of Foa island in the Ha'apai group and was a superb spot for doing not very much at all, surrounded by white sandy beaches and stunning blue waters. Enjoy.
