Trip to Tonga

Hi
I'm going to spend one month in Tonga and need some help!
Any suggestions on which islands i should go to? I would like to spend my month on several of them...
I'm looking for islands that are geared towards backpackers.. any suggestions on what island i should stay on or any cheap accommodation/hostels?
And is it possible to stay with families while you're there?

My major problem seems to be how to get to Samoa from Tonga at the end of my stay? It seems impossible to book online anyway..

At present Air NZ flies from Samoa to Tonga and reverse once a week. It's a flight that goes from Auckland/Tonga/Samoa/LA.

I think Vavau and/or Haapai would be more interesting than Tongatapu. Adventure Backpackers in Neaifu (Vavau ) is well-situated and has a good reputation. On Haapai, well, almost all the places are low-key and basic except the couple of resort-style places.
