Whale watching in Vavau? or in Haapai?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi, everyone

I am planning to visit Vavau from 9/Oct to 15/Oct.
However, I heard only few whales are in Vavau and there are many in Haapai.

If anyone went to Vavau or Haapai this year, could you advise me which is better for whale swimming this year?

best,

I have heard similar reports, but have not seen the situation myself in Vava'u. We've had many whales in Ha'apai this year so far.

Hi there!

Can only say that we loved Ha'apai! Amazing group of islands with the best beach I have ever seen! Brian and Sabine from Fins and Flukes know where it is.

Judging by their photo's there's been plenty of whales there this year and myself and my partner wished we hadn't had to go at the start of the season.

we had pretty good luck in vavau with our 1 day of whale watching, and heard them on 2 other dives as well, so they are definitely still in vavau - but sounds like haapai might even be better.
i did notice that it was cheaper to go with fins and flukes at top200 vs ALL operaters in vavau charging 275-300. seems like price fixing up there. with food prices too actually.
but a nice spot for sure.
