4 weeks from Oz to US?

I will have most of April to get from Oz to the west coast of the US. Can anyone recommend a good itinerary through the islands? I am thinking 3-5 stops along the way? Interested in getting a good flavor for the islands as I haven't spent any time out there before. Thanks in advance!

One possibility would be Australia to (Papua New Guinea then) Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, then some of the Polynesian countries.
Fiji is the crossroads, with flights in and out of most of the other countries.

There are no flights between Fiji and the Cook Islands. Air NZ ceased this route approx 3 - 4 years ago. Air NZ has also ceased its unprofitable Samoa - Tonga - LAX flight.
