a trip to Easter Island and Pitcairn IslandCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi! I'm a Brit living in Japan and I'm interested in going on a trip to visit both Easter island and Pitcairn island. Does anyone know if there are any trips from Tahiti that include visits to both islands? Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Becky :-)
I haven't been to both islands, but Easter Island shoudn't be difficult. There is at least one airline (LAN Chile ??) flying regularly, at least once a week, between Tahiti and Easter Island. Probably some fellow travellers know more details. In my opinion, there's no need to book a tour as the island can be easily explored individually. A visit to Pitcairn is quite expensive and should be planned well ahead. Check out the following company which offers boat tours to Pitcairn: Udo | 1
These are 2 very difficult places to visit due to remoteness in a very large ocean and the 2 are very far apart I know that cruises visit Easter island regularly from the Sth American coast, but that visits to pitcairn are infrequent and generally by merchant boats rather than commercial transport - no air link either.. | 2
Actually the two are not so far apart as things go in the region. Pitcairn is in fact the closest islands to Easter. A friend and I were just talking about this because I am also planning a South Pacific trip. He sent me the link to Pacific Expeditions in #1. There is another vessel with www.visitpitcairn.pn but this is a lot more expensive. The former is a better deal and I would recommend the combined trip that stops also at Henderson Island. To me Henderson, a UNESCO site which must rank as one of the five least visited of their sites, is just as worthy a destination as Pitcarin itself. I think the logical routing would be to take the direct flight from Tokyo to Papeete. You can then take the twice weekly LAN flights to Easter and back. Then you can go on a cruise to Pitcairn and back. Keep in mind this will be a very expensive trip, especially the Pitcairn leg. There is an alternative which is a cruise from Tahiti to Easter just as you requested with Zegrahm. But as you can see this will cost a minimum of $13,000, even more than the above, plus the flights to Papeete. So this trip will be expensive any way you cut it. Much of the cost will be Pitcairn; eliminate that and the Easter portion is easily doable. Pitcairn is known as an extreme destination for a reason. | 3
Thanks a lot for all the info! Much appreciated! :-) | 4
If money's no object you can also check out Ocean Voyages. They are based out of California but offer chartered sailing trips to both islands. For Pitcairn, I think you fly to the Gambiers then meet with a rep from Ocean Voyages to begin the trip. Good luck with it and happy travels! | 5
We have been in April 2010 in Pitcairn with Pacific Expeditions. No one of our group will do any journey any time again with that organisation! Search the Internet for (bad) reports from their journeys and their organisator Graham Wragg! A lot of people are still looking for their lost Money through him. | 6
Thanks for the update. Apparently there's now also a regular ferry service every 3 months from Mangareva to Pitcairn: US$ 4,000 return. | 7
