A vegetarian in the Cooks

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Am I heading for starvation? I dont eat meat or fish (eggs and milk, as much as i can get my hands on!)

will there be restaurants to get some vegetable pizza or pasta or anything veggie? or shops to get some food i can cook in the hut?

i will be in raro and aitutaki

cheers!

I think you will be fine. Plenty of Taro, Papaya (Pawpaw) mangos, salads, etc. As a cariverous person I have never looked for vegetarian pizza, but am sure it is available. The islands are full of chickens (and roosters that will wake you) so that is not a problem.

Have a great trip!

No problem, lots of vegetarian tourists have been to the Cooks. Contact Portofino, they can make up a vegetarian pizza. Foodlan and CITC Food market both have plenty of things for vegetarians, they now sell soy milk and other similar things as well.

thanks both! you are always at hand for good info, Raro.

great news about the pizza and the market. I dont think i could eat just fruit for 2 weeks! milk and eggs are fine, not a vegan.

phew...thanks!

Just to add a bit: Aitutaki had a LOT less options for food. Bring some packaged or canned foods you like with you, maybe even some veggies and fruit, as the selection there is very limited.
Have fun!

Bauhaus likes milk. Is fresh mik available in Cook Islands or is it all powdered or UHT as in Solomon Islands - I can't wait to get my hands on fresh milk when I get back to Australia.

There IS fresh milk on Rarotonga, once a week or so Foodland brings it in, maybe CITC Foodmarket also. BUT it is very expensive, maybe triple what UHT milk costs. so, we always used UHT milk for most things. Once in a while I'd splurge and get some fresh milk, it was great!

For UHT---leave it in the fridge overnight, it takes better that way.

Probably no fresh milk on Aitutaki, so just buy UHT.

Locals often use powdered, as it's even cheaper than UHT.
