Accomodation in Babeldaob, Palau

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

hi there,
we're travelling to Palau in January with our daughter (18 months) and are looking for accomodation in the north of Babeldaob. Does anyone have a recommendation for something child friendly? Our plan is to rent a car at the airport and go up north for a few days.

Also looking for a cheap place to stay near the airport of Koror, any recommendations?

Thanks!
Marianne

Hi Marianne,

There is very little in the way of lodgings on the north end of Babeldaob, I would reccomend North Beach Cottages. The managers are friendly and the place is child friendly.

There is not much in the way of cheap lodging near the airport, but Tree-D, Lehn's or DW Motel are all in Koror and easonably close to the airport by taxi.

Enjoy your trip

We stayed at Lehn's Motel in February and were pleased with our choice. They offer free airport pick up and at 2am in the morning it was super not to have to worry about finding transportation.

North Beach. It is great for a child since the water is very very shallow for a good distance and there are all kinds of fun things like shells and nuts on the beach.

But the entire place is so small, why would you stay near the airport- there is nothing of interest there and it doesn't take long to get in from town. Everyone mostly waits til they hear a plane coming in before driving over to the airport if they are picking someone up.

Thanks a lot for your advice! It sounds like North Cottages will work well for us, and I guess we might as well drive there from the airport instead of staying in Koror.
Really looking forward to our trip there :-)

You will have a great time. What time do you arrive in Koror, and how far will you have traveled? The compact road may be messy and you may be very tired. We got quite lost (maps are rudimentary at best) and we had lived there for 3 years. If you are thinking of arriving exhausted with a tired and crabby baby- you might not want to drive up to North Beach. And I'm not certain that rental cars are available at the airport, although I could be mistaken on this.

Thanks for the advice 5waldos. We will travel from Yap, so it won't be too long but indeed we might have a cranky baby (although she'll probably sleep in the car).
There probably isn't any public transport available?
I'll do some investigation if we can rent a car in the evening, we will land around 10 pm. I do think it would be nice to drive straight up to North Beach cottages, if it's only 1,5 hours (assuming we won't get lost), so we'll give that a try.

Car Rental is available at the airport in Koror, but you better make arrangements prior to your arrival Budget has an E=Mail address of budget@palau,net or Kings Rent A Car at kingsent@palau.net These E-Mail addresses are three years old but give them a try.

Budget phone number is (680) 488-4211
Kings phone number is (680) 488-2964

If you are arriving at 10 pm there is NO way you should try to drive up to North Beach, rental car at the airport or no. This is a largely unmarked road, I don't think there are lights, or few of them, and you are headed into the jungle. Stay in Koror, have the hotel pick you up, get a decent nights sleep, and head out the next day. Besdies, you will want to see what you can see in Balbedaob.

ok...sounds like we should stay at lehn's motel then the first night instead of driving up, it doesn't sound that safe ineed to drive at night.
I'll try those email addresses for the car rental, thanks for the tips!

I agree with 5Waldos and would not attempy driving to North Beach Cottages at night. Much wiser to stay in Koro that first night.
