Accomodation in Yasawas

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi there,
A friend and I are going to be in Fiji for the first two weeks in November and interested in taking the Yasawa flyer 14 day option. We are backpacking, so we are on a limited budget, but also inclined to pay a little extra if the accomodation varies greatly! I am wondering if anyone has any advice on if it is more economical to take the all inclusive Yasawa flyer 9Island Hopping' option that includes meals and accomodations; or if it a better option to chose accommodation independently. We are also curious as some of the resorts on the Yasawa Islands charge additionally for food and accommodation (Octopus Lodge, Oarsman Bay, Beachcomber, Manta Ray Island, South Sea Island, Bounty Island, etc). Can anyone let me know which resorts should not be missed; whether it is a good idea to book the all inclusive pass or find accommodation independent, and what we might expect to pay on accomodation (including food, as this seems to be standard), at some of these resorts??
Thanks kindly

Better to book accommodation independently. I encountered many people that had difficulties with their packages, whereas I had a seamless trip by booking my accommodation in advance and just getting the Bula pass. I think it also worked out cheaper.

If I recall correctly, most places meal plans were charged on top of the accommodation charge - but you are forced to buy the meal plan if you are staying at the place, so it really makes no difference.

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort should not be missed (it's beside Oarsmans). It's somewhat expensive for a backpackers budget, but you won't regret the splurge. Octopus is also very nice.

The all inclusive option can work out the cheapest, but you may have to put up with some terrible places. There were quite a number of stories about places with terrible food and very small portions.

In case you haven't worked it out already, Fiji is not a shoestring destination. The better budget resorts are about FJ$100 per person per night. I didn't make a direct comparison between booking the Bula or Combo pass as I wanted to stay at some places not on the Combo list.

What resort cannot be missed depends on you - there are very social places, very quiet places, and very active places. I personally liked Mantaray for the marine life - there was a whale, manta rays, reef shark, octopus and a heap of fish, all of which you could see snorkelling (you have to take a boat ride for the manta rays).
