| viladay03:36 UTC04 Mar 2010 | Tonga is amazing; the more you see of it, the better. If you can get out to the outer islands ('Eua, Vava'u, Ha'apai, Niuas) that is wonderful. However, some people do not have the budget for this, and in an effort to give you all some ideas for things to do on Tongatapu, here we go: 1) For those that enjoy water activities, Fatai Kayak Adventures offer rentals and tours on the lagoon. They also do adventure tours to the outer islands that include snorkeling at some of Tongatapu's best snorkeling spots (Pangaimotu, Makaha'a & Monuafe Islands - all destinations on their kayak tours). There is nothing like experiencing Tonga on the water. 2) Deep Blue Diving provides scuba tours both on Tongatapu's reefs, as well as at the well known "cathedral" on 'Eua. They also do whale watching and deep sea fishing. 3) There are also deep sea fishing operators at Royal Sunset and Fafa Islands. 4) There is some amazing surfing at Ha'atafu Beach (although at high tide due to the reef break). If you stay at Ha'atafu Beach Resort, Steve takes his guests out to some amazing breaks beyond the reef. 5) The Eastern side of Tongatapu has some very interesting historical landmarks; Ha'amonga, Langi (Ancient Tombs), Nukuleka (Cradle of Polynesia), Captain Cook's Landing, and 'Anahulu Cave. 6) Keleti Beach is a great place to have lunch or dinner while watching the waves break on the reef. 7) Check out the blowholes in Houma. 8) Definitely do not miss Hufangalupe Lookout at sunset. When you make the turn at Vaini, go all the way till the road ends at the cliffs. Take a bottle of wine and enjoy the stunning view - it is truly amazing. 9) Sunsets on the western side are also killer - enjoy a sundowner or a dinner show at Vakaloa or Liku'alofa - there are several resorts on this side. 10) 'Oholei has a dinner show in a cave that has quite the romantic effect. 11) Some amazing beaches on Tongatapu include Ha'atafu, Emeline, Hala Ika, Finehika, Keleti, etc. Take a map and ask a local villager for directions as the turn off roads are unmarked. 12) There is some great cliff fishing (sharks, tuna, etc.) at a turn off road not to far from Keleti Beach. Ask the locals for directions, as this road is unmarked. The views here are also stunning. 13) Day trips on Sunday to Pangaimotu (popular local hang out on Sunday) and Fafa (for a more intimate setting) are a great way to wrap up the week. 14) Rent a bicycle or a scooter, take a picnic and tour the island, take time to stop at the beaches. Tongatapu is fairly flat, so an easy ride. 15) Attend a traditional kava ceremony, or attend church (a great experience whether you are religious or not) and a great way to meet the locals, who most likely will invite you home and take you in as a member of their family. If you are lucky to attend a Tongan wedding or funeral, you will experience first hand and really come to appreciate the intimate and strong ties of the Tongan extended family. These events showcase some of the most deepest emotions, as well as some of the most preserved & authentic Tongan traditions. 16) Try out the nightlife (Billfish, Reload, Steak & Rock, Shooters, etc.) - if you make Tongan friends, go out with them for a fun and memorable experience. It will give you an insight into what it is like being youthful and free in Tonga. And if you find yourself hitched by the end of your trip...this also happens frequently in Tonga (and welcome to the family)! lol So hope this helps those that are planning a trip to Tongatapu. Have an amazing time! 'Ofa 'atu! Cheers!
