Australia and Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

HI everybody
im planning to join my boyfriend who lives in Australia next spring and we would like to make a trip to the Pacific Islands
Can someone give us an advise to where to go, which are the most beautiful places that we cannot lose, etc
Thanks a lot for your help :)
Anto

You will get a lot of advice on various countries, depending on our personal preferences. What we need to know first is what you are expecting from your visit to the islands - beach resorts, culture, diving, somewhere few or many tourists go.
Do you like hiking or trekking, or travelling with the locals, or would you prefer to stay somewhere comfortable near a beach?
Do you want 5-star accommodation, or a hut on the beach with no power or plumbing, or somewhere in between?

Thanks a lot H2ooh:)
Dear Ozziegiraffe, we are not a couple of "5 stars hotel...sure we would like it sometimes :), but we prefer some easier hotels , mayb sometthing in between not too expensive
About what we would like to see....about me...know the local culture, above all, and admire the nature, trekking is good too, not too touristic, my boyfriend loves the diving and all the rest ive told you about
we are not searching for a too confortable stay close to the beach,
I found interesrting what you wrote about travelling with locals...you know more about it?
thanks a lot:)

Air New Zealand operates a weekly direct air service from Sydney to Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Otherwise both Virgin Australia and Air NZ transit through Auckland to Raro.

Aitutaki is remarkably attractive. I also suggest that you spend a few days on Rarotonga first to enjoy the local sights and activities before heading over to Aitutaki to indulge in some R&R and experience the lagoon. Air Rarotonga is currently the only domestic airline within the Cook Islands. Currency is NZ dollars, good standards of accommodation and meals. Nearly everyone speaks English. As a Polynesian destination it offers good value and something for all budgets.

Check out the Solomon Islands website, for a larger island country that is much less touristy that much of the Pacific.
It is known for some of the best diving in the world, but also offers everything from resorts to village homestays.

If you can afford it, French Polynesia has amazing diving in the Tuamotu atoll (flights are a bit pricey to get there from Tahiti though), plus lots of cool little 'pensions' to stay at if the big 5 star resorts aren't your thing/are too expensive. Also, I found the Tuamotus weren't too touristy compared to other islands of French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora etc, although Bora Bora is worth a visit just to see - it really is insanely beautiful), or Fiji.
