Australia to China or China to Oz---Which is the best Route?

So I have an indefinite amount of time (ok maybe 6 months) to visit Melbourne, Sydney, Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong and Shanghai. I plan on starting Mid August. I have a few definite spots in mind for Thailand but will largely play the rest by ear once I'm on the ground.

I'm trying to figure out the best end to start--either in Australia and work my way up or China and work my way down. Obviously I want to avoid wet season/winter as best as possible, but sometimes that cannot be avoided. Any suggestions on best routes for travel in this area between mid/late August to February?
