Backpacking HoneymoonCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I am looking into a back packing honeymoon around the South Pacific Islands for about 3-4weeks. We are looking at:
Also, coming from the UK so which way would be best - via Oz or the USA?
I personally would avoid flying via the US, thus the need for the ESTA (assuming you are UK passport holders). Depending on where you start, you could equally fly via Tokyo, Seoul, or Singapore to Fiji. New Zealand may also be an option too, particularly for the Cook Islands and Samoa. If you wanna add an extra couple of destinations - go via Chile and/or Easter Island to Tahiti. Flights from Santiago fly once a week (I believe) to Tahiti via Easter Island with LATAM airlines. | 1
there is also the option of Hong Kong to Fiji with Fiji airways, they would have good prices as well | 2
Flying Cathay to Hong Kong then to Fiji will probably be cheapest alternative. There's a code share, so could book entire trip with Cathay. On the other hand, when I was researching my own trip the return Nadi-Hong Kong was not direct. It might be more convenient to book HK-Nadi separate with Fiji airways. Then use Fiji as hub (but see below about itinerary). Ferries between island nations are as good as nonexistent. You'll have to fly and the costs will rise accordingly. Ferries within a given country do exist and may (or may not) be a practical alternative to domestic flights. Distances are huge in the S Pacific. Inter-island flights also are more likely to use smaller planes for smaller runways. This means seating is limited and reservations may be needed. I don't understand your itinerary. Do you want to include all 4 countries? Not something I'd want to do. Or do you want to go to just one country from that list? Fiji, for example, includes several islands and with a lot of variation in scenery and character. If you did want to visit a different country, rather than a different island, it could be more convenient to pick an island country closer to Fiji .. Tonga or Vanuatu. | 3
