Best Country in South Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello,

I'm wanting to travel to the south pacific for the first time and would like your suggestion for the best place to visit, right now I am thinking of Vanuatu or the Solomon Islands (but am open too alternatives). My wife and I are looking for beautiful beaches, good food, cheap beer, but also adventure (ie. wildlife, trekking,) and affordable places to stay. I'm used to travelling through Asia and have become accustomed to great times on the cheap. (we'll be going for about 1 month in July or August of next year)

Thanks in advance for your help!
Ian

PNG

But note that none of these countries is really noted for its cuisine (though I do like the traditional food) and none of them is anywhere nearly as cheap as Asia.

You will find beautiful scenery, including beaches, in Solomon Islands, and lots of interesting places to trek (provided you take a local guide who knows the particular tribal area you are walking in. The food is fairly bland compared to Asian food, and limited in variety though I like it as it includes lots of seafood, and tropical fruit. (Malaitan pineapples are to die for).
There is a local beer called Solbrew, that I understand beer drinkers enjoy (I don''t like beer, so can't give a personal opinion.)
Travel is cheap on local boats, but flying isn't. Village accommodation is cheap and basic, but the village experience is amazing.
Check the "exploring Solomons" site in my sig line for more information.
Wildlife is limited to birds, lizards and possums on land, but if you travel by boat, you will often see a pod of dolphins as escort. Plenty of beautiful fish to see if you snorkel or dive.

I agree with both of these posts- PNG and Solomons are amazing and full of the adventure you seek. But beware that PNG is NOT cheap. New Ireland in PNG is worth the expense IMO.
