Best Route?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I have been traveling for 13 months now and am currently in Indonesia. I have found that I am tending to travel east generally so my next destination to live while on the road would be the South Pacific Islands before I get to South America.

I have no time scales and never have any set itineraries, I usually just 'follow my nose'. I have not done any research yet, but thought I would ask the question as to weather anyone has traveled across the South Pacific eastward, and if so what Countries/Islands they visited on their journey?

I realise that 'The Route' will not be straight forward and will involve flights an boats, I'm not made of money so always try to find as reasonable priced way of traveling.

I would like to take in Micronesia, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands Tahiti and possibly Hawaii.

Any info, tips or experiences will be greatly received...

Thanks in advance,

Ivan

I travelled Indonesia - PNG - Solomons - Vanuatu - New Caledonia - Fiji - Samoa - Niue - New Zealand.
These days there is no longer a Samoa-Niue flight, so you'd have to fly from Samoa direct to NZ, or back to Fiji and on to Tonga before NZ.
Beyond the Solomons, you will have to fly from one country to the other.

Micronesia and eastern Polynesia are not well and certainly not cheaply connected to the countries listed above, though you can fly from NC to Tahiti, from NZ to Cooks and Tahiti, and from Fiji or NZ to Hawaii.

Micronesia is best reached from the Philippines or Hawaii.

here is a good rough guide I have found useful for planning trips. Wikipedia the airports of the countries you want to visit and see which airlines fly out of those air ports. eg check out Nadi airport in Fiji and see which airlines fly where. You can piece together a possible route and then visit airlines websites to check flight details, frequency, timetable etc
