Best Singers in The South Pacific?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Perhaps the subject line shouldn't be 'best' perhaps it should be most striking/harmonious.

Church or outside church?

Your thoughts?

My vote is the Ferasubua church choir in the Lau Lagoon, Malaita, Solomon Islands.
If you want a chance to hear them, go to People First Net and click on the "Treks and Adventures in Solomon Islands" Link, or contact me for a home stay on the area!
Unlike most Solomon choirs, the women don't have a nasal tone that grates on Western ears, and like all islanders, their harmonies are wonderful.
Instead of trying to translate European hymns, the choirmaster has used Kustom tunes, and written words in their own Lau language, so the songs fit the voices, in a way Eurpoean tunes don't.

Church music might be more harmonious, but to me Pidgin/Bislama language pop from PNG and Vanuatu is much more striking, interesting and better. Part of the fun is being able to understand it, of course - it's often truly amusing!

Definitely church - at least that is the case in Fiji

Some of the impromptu, Vailima-fueled singing sessions that happen outside some of the nightclubs in Apia, Samoa at closing time are truly striking and unforgettable.
