better to avoid festivals in PNG?

I am thinking of traveling to PNG this summer and have been debating trying to get the trip to coincide with the Mt Hagen Festival. I have some mixed thoughts about this though and would love some advice. Specifically, how "touristy" is the festival? Obviously that's a relative concept in PNG but would I be better off actually avoiding the festival time? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
