Boat from Papua New Guinea to Queensland (Australia)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Does anybody know if it is possible to go from Papua New Guinea to Australia by boat ?
and from where in PNG to where in Australia exactly ?

I doubt it.

Not even the people-smugglers have been able to move people into Oz from PNG. Arrive at Bamaga and you are in the middle of nowhere.

i found one topic related:

It seems possible.
but seems old and kind of confused...hmmm...

I would be coming from Indonesia and then going (reading the post above) go to Vanimo(PNG)-> Port Moresby->Malalaua->Kerema-> Ihu-> Baimuru->Daru->Torres Straits Islands->Thursday Island(AUSTRALIA).

I think the crossing from Daru to the Torres Straits Islands is strictly for locals only. In fact, tourists require a special permit to visit the islands even from Australia.
If the crossing is done illegally, the Australian authorities won't exactly welcome you with open arms - especially if you happen to be from Afghanistan, as your profile claims. ;-)

And you can't get that permit in PNG.
And without it, you'd be there illegally.

Your best chances to cross legally by sea would be by catching a ride on a yacht or cruise ship from Moresby, Alotau, Lae or Rabaul straight to a legal entry point in Queensland. Finding a ride requires luck, of course.

hmmm yes...or maybe a freight ship?

I was in Dili (East Timor) a couple of years ago, where I met some crazy people who wanted to travel to Australia by boat. There is a regular cargo service from Dili to Darwin. And apparently, they're sometimes prepared to take tourists on board. However, what one poor chap was told is that, according to Australian immigration rules, anyone entering the country by cargo ship (perhaps, in fact, on any ship) has to give a complete passenger manifest to Australian immigration 72 hours before they arrive.

What this means is that not only do you need to find a freight ship willing to take you, but you need to find it at least a couple of days before they leave Papua New Guinea, so that they can send your name and passport details to Australian authorities.

I've never heard confirmation of this rule anywhere else (nor have I ever been to Australia), but this rule was stopping people from hitching rides on cargo boats in Dili when I was there.

And do yo think it's possible to get into Australia illegally?

9

Do you think is possible to not ask rhetorical question that don't contribute in any way to the topic ?

Thirdeye4, just curious, did you find a ferry or smth?
