budget travel in July

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I would like to travel around the pacific on a cheap budget in July august September, and have a few Q's

Thanks
1. Is this a good time to travel?
2.is it possible to go from mainland PNG to New Britain to New Ireland to Boganville to the Solomon Islands, via cheap local ferries
3. Is it easy to find cheap/free accommodation in churches, random peoples homes, couch surfing, villages, police stations etc.?
4. Are locals friendly?

You need to take good care, follow protocols and be respectful of culture when travelling in PNG. Personal safety can be an issue.

Here are the Australian Travel warnings:http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Papua_New_Guinea

Container ships or recreational yachts are likely the best way to get from PNG to the Solomon Islands. Motor canoes (supply canoes) go between the islands but they generally don't have safety gear on board - these will only get you as far as the Western Provence. It may be best to fly into Honiara.

Safe Travels.
