By Sea from Papua Neuguinea to Peru

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi!

Is there a way to come from papua neuguinea (or fiji, or australia) to peru (or maybe ecuador, or somewhere south america) by sea? Is there any possibility that is not too expensive (on a backpackers budget)? (other than a cargo ship from A to B or a flight from A to B) Or if it is not possible to do it all by sea - for which sections would we have to take a flight? Would be great if there is a way, so we don“t have to just fly over all those beautiful islands :) Any experiences? And is there a time of the year you would not recommand for such a trip?

Thanks a lot for your help guys!!

Basic answer: NO. Even if you owned your own boat and could sail it the winds wouldn't allow such a course.
As far as freighters, profit is always the concern and there isn't enough commerce between the countries you've mentioned as an origin and the countries you've mentioned as a destination.
From Asia most of the cargo discharges in Mexico for shipment to the West Coast of South America (sometimes in the US, but not as much as once done)
I suggest you use the Search function (top right of page, blank space next to Help) and look for 'freighter travel'...there was also a recent post about getting to the Galapagos Islands, you might look that up also as it discusses some of the difficulties in ocean travel.
