Camping fuel in New Caledonia

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi guys,

Does anybody know what they carry down there? Propane/butane mix, white fuel, etc.

Thanks a lot!

Never needed any of those.
Most campsites are run by Kanak owners living on the site, and they allowed the use of a stove as far as I remember.
A few are unsupervised with no such facilities, but then you can just eat baguettes and pate or whatever, purchased in a nearby shop. Well, at least to me this was no hardship - rather a welcome change from greasy cooked food in the neighbouring English-speaking countries! ;-)
Remember, you will never be far from "civilization" in New Caledonia.

Get yourself a Whisperlite international. They burn unleaded gas.

Thanks for your input. As I am also heading to the Solomons and Vanuatu, where it is unlikely I will do my own cooking, I am now leaning towards just leaving all the cooking gear at home.

3

That's exactly what I did.

Sounds like a good itinerary BTW - only PNG is missing! ;-)

4

PNG - I wish! I 'll wait til I have at least 2 full months. Sounds like such a fascinating place.

OP, it would be pointless taking camping or cooking gear to Solomon islands, as there is nowhere appropriate to camp with your own gear. Most places offer traditional houses for visitors. Many locally-used accommodation places have cooking facilities, others provide meals.
