Can we do Aus, Vietnam, Fiji and the islands on £5000 for two?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Helloes! First post here though I've been a long-time lurker. Hoping you guys and girls can help out slightly. My boyfriend and I are planning on spending 9 months travelling Dec 2013-Sept 2014. We're flying from UK > Paris > Melbourne before Xmas (to see cricket and see in NY in Sydney), then spending a month around Australia. We're also dying to visit Vietnam for a month, and Cambodia/Laos for a month too (although we're happy to miss Cambodia/Laos out if it means we save a fair bit of money). After that, it all gets murky. From what I've read about Fiji/Bora Bora/French Polynesia they're proper honeymoon hot spots with not much budget accommodation available. Our original plan was to fly from Auckland > Fiji and then keep heading east until we get to Kiribati > Hawaii > Cali. A rough plan for the 9 month trip would look like this: Australia > Vietnam > Cambodia > Fiji > American Samoa > Cook Islands > French Polynesia > Kiribati > Hawaii > USA. So. Would £5,000 for two people backpacking be enough? That would need to include flights to Aus and all food/travel/accommodation (budget is fine!). Are we totally insane for thinking we can do a 9 month trip in this part of the world on that amount of money? Or can it be done? Any hints, tips and suggestions would be great! Thank you!
Price your airfare and then see if you have any money left. My guess is that you won't even be close. | 1
I also think you'll spend that much just on airfare, plus a cheap dorm bed in Melbourne is 15£ per person | 2
Not even remotely close to enough. That's an average of roughly $30/day for 2 people. You can't even do just SE Asia on that sort of budget. | 3
Hi coconutforest! Welcome to TT! Australia > Vietnam > Cambodia > Fiji > American Samoa > Cook Islands > French Polynesia > Kiribati > Hawaii > USA. There aren't direct flights from Cambodia to Fiji. There aren't direct flights from Fiji to American Samoa. There aren't direct flights from American Samoa to the Cook Islands (BTW, that routes means a big detour). There aren't direct flights from the French Polyneia to Kiribati (another big detour required)... If you price your airfare, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to answer your question by your own. BTW, Hawaii is fully part of the USA. | 4
