Car rental in Tahiti

My husband and I are spending 4 days in Tahiti. We are planning on stoping at the Intercontinental at Papeete and wondered if people recommend hiring a car? They aren't cheap so I don't want to hire one and then find we can easily get around on foot/ public transport. We spent time in Rarotonga where you really do need a car to get around and we would like to know if Tahiti is the same? Thanks in advance!

I would suggest you rent one for a day, it's fun to drive around the entire island. But a day should be enough, you can either rent taxis, use Le Truck, or the hotel itself might have a shuttle to take you into downtown Papeete. Le Truck can be fun, it's what the locals use, but they're old beat-up trucks without air conditioning.
