Catching a boat to the Soloman Islands?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey all
Well I'm odd to SE in May for afew months and then on to Brisbane Australia. Ive been reading as much info as I can
about the Pascific Islands, and SI stands out the most to me as off the beaten track, with beautiful snorkllig, and
relativly cheap. Although the flights seem quite expensive. I was woundering if anyone new of any boats haeding
out that way from Australia? Either Yaht or cargo boat that I could hitch a ride on, and if so where would be the
best place to get one from? North Queensland maybe?

Would really love some help with this.
Cheers

Yachts would pretty much be your only hope, and not even many of those go to the Solomons.
You could find a boat from PNG more easily! ;-)

Flights remain the most realistic option.

Since the beginning of this month, fares have become much cheaper between Brisbane and Honiara, as there is a new airline, Skyairworld in the picture.
Also check out
Solomon Airlines, although there are cheaper fares now than seem to be posted on their website.
For this reason, I always book my tickets through a reliable Australian travel agent.
I agree with Laszlo about boats - there aren't any, except the odd yachtie (you could contact the Honiara Yacht Club on (677) 22500 or yachtclub@solomon.com.sb - they may know someone who is heading their way.
(Oh, and a couple of very expensive cruise ships)

There is a regular freighter run to Honiara although I don't know if it carries any passengers. Try e-mailing or phoning any sea freight handling company and they should be able to give you the shipping company's name. The freight handling company I use is Pacific Air Cargo (Sea Freight Division) toll free phone number 1800 735 665.

Swires shipping in Brisbane are one of 2 or 3 companies shipping freight to Solomon Islands, but they are container ships, and as far as I know do not take passengers.
