Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi All,

for the last couple of weeks I have been trying to decide on a trip for 7-10 days to somewhere in the south pacific. We have been to Thailand and Malaysia and the beaches in Thailand were amazing and snorkelling in malaysia was breath taking.. I am looking for somewhere with a good beacj for swimming and relaxing, good snorkeling and somewhere that is not over-run by rug rats.

I have looked and read plenty on here but nothing is standing out. I wouldnt say no in going back to Koh Samui but would mind trying something different.

HELP PLEASE!!!

If you've looked and read plenty but still nothing stands out for you, perhaps you should indeed just head back to SE Asia.
Maybe to Indonesia or the Philippines, if you want a new country.

The South Pacific has its charms, but someone whose idea of an amazing place is Koh Samui may just find it too quiet and too expensive.

If still keen, PNG, the Solomons and Palau are the countries with the best diving/snorkelling.
Beaches are everywhere.

Koh Samui? Hasn't it become very built up? You might ask on the Thailand branch for an alternative destination there.

Not trying to be negative, but if nothing you've read here appeals to you that much, you're probably not the SP type. There is little hype here, not a lot of nightlife, and we don't really go out of our way to convince people to visit, it's kind of a self-selection.

And Pacific Islanders are given to having lots of rug rats, often 10-15 in a family. So, maybe not for you.

Waldos---Do you think that becuase we don't really have rugs here (too hot, too much mold), we have woven mats, that instead of "rug rats" kids in the islands should henceforth be called "mat rats" ??? :)

Most likely Raro- mat rats- has a certain ring to it I would say. I rather like it. Mat Rats. I would say you are onto something there, Raro.

And bye the bye (or is it, by the by????) - Happy Valentines Day

take a look at Uepi, (www.uepi.com) in the Solomon Islands, only takes about 20 guests, it's rare to have any kids there + the snorkelling is world class, and right off the island, so no costly boat trips. BTW, the food is excellent too.
