Changing money in Fiji (AUD)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Gday all,

Anyone got thoughts on the best way to change money on Fiji? I'm travelling with AUD (unfortunately), my bank offers ATM transactions at 3%, against their exchange rate which is about 4% below interbank, so not particularly keen on that.

Noted when we travelled to indonesia last year that considerably better rates were available on the street for cash, and that businesses would generally accept AUD at better than bank rates - but is this the case in Fiji too?

Thanks,
Alex

On my trip to Fiji, I happily got some cash at the Airport ATM (ANZ).I used credit cards wherever possible , which was accepted at all bar the smallest places.

Fiji is not Bali and you wont find money cahngers everywhere. I would trust any I met on the street in Nadi anyhow.Mind, I wouldnt trust them in Bali either.

Cheers, ok, ATM it is. Thanks for that :)

Incidentally I had no problems at all in Bali or Lombok (mostly lombok) with the money changers, and I changed at least a dozen times with different dealers.

I'd avoid moneychangers in Fiji, I just don't trust them. Not that many around anyway. Exchange for maybe F$200 before you go, then use credit cards whenever possible, it will give you the best exchange rate, tho many now add a 1-2% "excahnge fee". Still, their basic exchange rate is good, better than cashing currency at banks in Fiji.
