Cheap accommodation in Micronesia

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi.

I will be travelling by myself in Micronesia (Palau, Yap, Guam, Saipan, Chuuk and Pohnpei) for a month in Jan-Feb 2008. There seems to be a dearth of affordable accommodation in the area. Whilst I am willing to pay for experiences such as the diving, I was hoping to skimp a bit on accommodation. I'm not fussed where I stay and am willing to slum it if necessary. I am aware that there are not hostels in the area but I've heard that there is the possibility of organising homestays with local families. Any ideas on where to organise this or any other suggestions for inexpensive accommodation? I'd rather not pay $US100 a night for a place that I'll only be sleeping in. Thanks in advance.

Visit the Palau Visitors Authority web site for information on budget lodgings and homestays in Palau. Lots of fairly inexpensive places in Palau. Don't know about the other locations, have not visited your other destinations.

Good luck.

if you go to Pohnpei stay at Nara Gardens. You can get an apartment style room for $40 and night, that's the cheapest place I know of there. In Palau there is a similar option called Len's Apartments. The cheapest place I know of in Chuuk is R.S. Plaza for about $50 a night, slightly ghetto but will do the job as long as the island power is running.
