Cheapest Pacific Island

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

So which is the cheapest tourist island in the S.Pacific? Lots of my friends reckon Fiji but I think there must be cheaper, e.g. Samoa?

In the Pacific, you also have to consider the cost of getting there from wherever you are. It is possible Samoa would be cheaper for an American than an Australian, for example, as it is closer to America than Fiji, but further from Australia.

Fiji is the cheapest, cheaper than Samoa for living costs.
Of course in small, compact Samoa you spend less on getting around.

Only the politically "Asian" countries like the Philippines or Indonesia, parts of which are definitely more the part of the South Pacific than of Asia by any but political definition, would be cheaper than Fiji, I think.

I'll give that honor to Tutuila in the Samoan group. Our shared bath was $30 a night, we ate at a Chinese restaraunt for 3 dollars and most of the activities were free. A really scenic bus tour cost 2 dollars each way and was spectacular. The driver stopped for pics. No hassle. Biggest expense was beer at rockin' clubs; 3 or 4 bucks a pop depending on the time. Carry out beers at the hotel were $1.50`. The return fare from Apia was $135.We could have cut that in half on the interisland ferry. All was safe and clean.
