Chilean Govt Tries To Starve Rapa Nui Tourism Dependent Inhabitants

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

In a classic divide & conquer move the Chilean Govt has on the one hand Announced plans to have schools teach in the Rapa Nui language and on the other is planning to cancel flights to the Island

Good news on the language front, bad on the other.

This baffled me a bit though:

"Already, Chilean is the dominant language on the small island"

I thought Chileans mostly spoke Spanish? ;-)

Chilean air carrier LAN Airlines reportedly plans to suspend its new service to Rapa Nui until next year.
The airline, which offers direct service between Lima, Peru and Rapa Nui, plans to suspend flights in April and resume service January 22.

Lan Airlines, NOT the government plan to SUSPEND (not cancel) a NEW flight from Lima Peru due to a delay in delivery of new aircraft.
The existing services from Santiago and Papeete remain.

Very misleading OP.
