Christmas and New Year in the Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Planning my RTW to start in October and looking at the idea of spending Christmas and New Year in the pacific most likely Samoa or Fiji.

1) Is accommodation easy to get at this time of year or does it get booked up ?

2) Would accommodation cost a lot more at this time of year. By a lot more I mean more than double what you would pay at other times of the year ?

3) What about flights to New Zealand from the Pacific in terms of Cost and availability

In a nutshell would I be better off going the "other way" and visit the Pacific islands at a different time of the year.

There are 3 reasons why I would consider looking for a different time to visit practically anywhere in the Pacific:

  1. It is both hot/wet season and cyclone season in the Pacific in December January.
  2. Pacific Islanders are strongly Chrisitan and strongly family-oriented, and spend the holidays in church and family celebrations, to a large extent. This often means that city workers will travel to home villages for the holidays, making internal travel more congested. This is likely to be less of a problem in Fiji, which is more tourist oriented, but this is not a good time for cultural/village experiences.
  3. Christmas/January is also the Southern hemisphere summer holiday, so many Australians and New Zealanders are looking for holidays. That makes it high season in the islands, and harder to get cheap plane fares.

Yes, flights also will fill up with islanders living in NZ or Australia returning home for the holidays. Same reason, domestic flights fill up around Christmas and New Yrs. also.

I agree with Ozzie, it is very humid in the South Pacific from Dec to April or so. If you do go then, try to stay on the east side of your island (that's the windward side in the South Pacific) if possible. If you can afford A/C, do it if humidity tends to bother you.
