Civil War in FijiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
So next summer, I am planning to go on a Contiki in New Zealand and we're wanting to travel around Australia and the Pacific Islands after the trip. I really want to go to Fiji but heard that right now there is a civil war happening over there. So I was just wondering if anyone knew if it is safe or not to go. Thanks!
LOL! That's all I can comment on this. Maybe some fellow Americans will be more understanding and will bother with a longer reply. | 1
There was a coup in Fiji in the 80's. A Contiki tour of NZ is about as safe as you can get, by comparison Fiji might seem a little racy. Main dangers: sunburn, oversleeping, sore back from laying in hammock. Go for it. Or even better, go to a Pacific Island from where they don't export overpriced tap water... | 2
I'm sorry Jenelle, Fiji is a beautiful country full of beautiful people. Of course there will be a few hustlers in the tourist areas of Nadi, but once you get out onto the islands you will find the most genuinely lovely people. Amazing sunsets, crystal clear water, waterfalls. I'm sure you will love it. | 3
No civil war in Fiji. It's safer than Cincinnati. | 4
I'm just curious: what's the source spreading this rumour??? | 5
Jenelle, as a matter of interest, are you talking about Northern Hemisphere Summer? If so, it will be very cold in New Zealand, as it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. | 6
There is tension between the Indians and Fijians resulting in a number of coups over the years, but a civil war is extremely over-exaggerated. As a tourist you probably won't even notice the strained relationships, unless it's something you'd enjoy bringing up in casual conversation (as I tend to do). The only thing people will caution you about is to not walk around Suva alone at night. There's always a few groups of drunken or unemployed lads hanging around in need of cash. Not had any bad run-ins myself, but it's something the locals will warn you about. | 7
