Communication - UK to Cooks

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

My girlfriend is about to go and work on Rarotonga for 2 months and I just wondered, what is the best and cheapest way to communicate with her from the UK. Yer obviously there is email but I'm wondering about things like Skype and international phone cards.

What are people's experiences?

Thanks,
Nick.

I has Skype when I lived there (until last yr). It wasn't very good most of the time due to the slow internet connection, etc.

Telecom has some discounted rates to NZ/Austr/US/, like a flat NZ$5 or NZ$10 for an hour, but I'm not sure it extends to the UK.

And phone rates to and from the Cooks are among the highest in the world, if those specials don't apply.

So, it may come down to a quick call once a week.

One month I spent about NZ$1000 on phone calls to a girlfriend in the US. I had to by a ringing timer and set it to 5 minutes, and make sure to hang up soon after the bell rang, or I would have gone broke!
