"Destinations"... A travel show about idiots.Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I just caught a new (to me anyways) travel show here in Canada on the Outdoor Life Network called "Destinations". Has anyone seen it? Never caught the credits, so I have no idea where it is from other than obviously N. America by the accents. Anyways, 2 young lads are travelling the world... Their adventures on today's episode took them to the Cook Islands... All kinds of travesties. I found it interesting that at one point they sea kayaked on Aitutaki to one of the outer moto and camped for the night!! I thought camping was illegal in the Cooks? Also catching and slaughtering coconut crabs and watching them open coconuts was a scream. Other adventures included the one traveller being upset because his mobile would not work on Mangaia (he was forever on his mobile), whinging about lack of luxury, a pig hunt and bush beer piss ups on Atiu and lost luggage, course language and rampant alcohol abuse...... They are the stereotypical young traveller type that reinforce the stereotype.
Did a quick google, it's called Departures, a Canadian show. Regarding camping on a motu on Aitutaki, sometimes TV shows (with a payment) can do what ordinary tourists can't. | 1
Haven't seen it, but I thought I saw a listing on the Cable TV directory. I guess the only good thing is that like-minded idiots who need cell phones all the time will hopefully avoid the Cooks! | 2
PS---Yes, as Silvano pointed out, camping on a motu---or anywhere, in fact---is illegal in the Cooks. But as she noted, TV shows often pay the owner to let someone camp out. | 3
I understand that they were special circumstances, but the message that was sent out was that "You can just throw your tent up anywhere in the Cooks" . Canadians? Ha! Not surprised. At least I didn't see any maple leaf flags plastered all over their luggage.. Why folks "need" to be connected every single waking moment whilst on holidays is beyond me... Especially when coming to such relatively remote locations at Samoa or the Cooks. Isn't that the whole idea of coming here? A opportunity to get away from that "nasty" real world? It's like the poster who couldn't understand why she could not get an internet connection for her laptop at Virgin Cove in Samoa.... I guess I am not in that mindset. | 4
4 years of living in Solomon Islands without even a landline in the 90s gave me a dread of mobile phones when I finally returned to Australia, and a number of show-offs thought they should disturb entire restaurants. | 5
