Diving in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Can anyone recommend some "can't miss" dives in Fiji. Or direct me to an online guide to diving in Fiji.

I am an AOW diver with moderate (40+ dives) experience. I have dove in Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Hondruras, and Nicaragua. How does Fiji compare? From what I have heard I have high expectations.

I understand much of the diving in Fiji is resort based and therefore on the expensive side. Any thoughts on this? I'd rather not break the bank if possible.

Thank you

There's world-class diving throughout Fiji- the tough part is figuring out how many areas you have the time
and budget to reach after arriving at Nadi on Viti Levu. The best diving is off the outlying islands such as
the Rainbow Reef between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, . Jean-Michel Cousteau chose Savusavu on Vanua
Levu as the venue for his dive resort. Kadavu has the Great Astrolabe Reef. If you can handle the airfare
to one of these islands, these are the locations of some of Fiji's top dive sites. Diving is usually with a resort-
but in Fiji all accommodations are called "resorts" and the key is to find one (usually Fijian-owned) with mid-
range room prices that also have a dive center- the dive costs are usually more moderate at these resorts.
(And remember F $200 is about US $110) There's also excellent diving in the Yasawa Islands accessible
by boat from Nadi's Denarau Harbor or Lautoka . Check out ( www.bbcdi.ca/wayalailai) fthe website for
the Wayalailai Eco Haven Resort on the Yasawa Island of Wayasewa. If you think you will be diving every
day of your Fiji visit, you may find it worthwhile to book a dive package all-inclusive deal from home.

Volivoli beach resort has fantastic 4-bed dorms which are very reasonable. The diving around that area is great.
