Do you have experience with the pacific islands? Please help me then!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi, i'm planning a backpacking trip. It is so hard to choose where to go to... BUT i'm strongly considering the pacific islands. My concern though is the price. From my research so far, i get the impression that it is super pricy to get around there. Flights seem veeeery expensive and many of the islands are so far away from everything, that i don't expect that there are ferries. Have i gotten a completely wrong impression? Do you have any advice on how to get around without spending all of your life savings? Any other advice on the area or other good places for backpacking is appreciated! Thank you so much for taking your time to read this. Have a great day!!

There are indeed almost no ferries, so getting around means flying.
However, flights between neighboring countries can usually be had for around $300 or so oneway, especially in the SW Pacific, centred on Fiji.
That is also the cheapest corner of the Pacific, with Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Solomons (plus New Caledonia if you like camping) being the cheapest countries as far as living costs are concerned.
Also, while international passengers shipping services are almost nonexistent, you can usually get around by sea within each country. Countries like Fiji, Tonga and the Solomons have many diverse islands, so you could see a lot without flying within these.
