Does it exist? The perfect exotic and romantic location for my girlfriend's 21st.

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi there! I am looking to book an exciting holiday away for a week or so for my longtime girlfriend's 21st. I was looking at places like Antarctica (a cruise there - exciting but also romantic) or Madagascar! Unfortunetly these two are out of my budget ($1000-$3000). Someone suggested New Caledonia - relaxing but also exciting wildlife and landscape wise. Although maybe it is too 'touristy' and like western/Hawaii vibe. But do you guys have any suggestions? We live in Australia and would ideally go mid year. Also hopefully not TOO many other tourists where we'll be.. I know this is a specific request just looking for somewhere perfect for her! If anyone knows its you guys. Thanks if you can help!

I think Madagascar is far cheaper than New Caledonia (except for the ticket there from AU), but also far less beautiful overall than most people think.

NC is nothing like Hawaai ASFAIK.
Certainly not in terms of tourist numbers and culture.

But if still in doubt, you could try Vanuatu.
Very unwesternized, lightly-touristed, and has some great beaches and scenery.
Also cheap to fly from AU.

Assuming you're on the south/east coasts of Australia, then Fiji is one of the cheapest (and easiest) options. Even it though would be at the top end of your budget if that's $3000 total for two people. It's the most touristy place in the south pacific, but even at that it's nowhere near being like Hawaii.

The other option, particularly if you're in western or northern Australia would be to head to Indonesia. Aussies flock to Bali, so you could head somewhere a little more off the beaten path like Lombok. Your dollar will go a lot further in Indonesia than any of the south pacific countries.

Maybe look closer to home?
There are some stunning small resorts in the Kimberley. A more exotic place you won't find anywhere.
Spend the airfare on a more expensive spot?

Cheers,
Peter
