Earthquakes SW of Guam

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Yikes- has the Pacific decided to fall to pieces? 16 earthquakes of >5 over the past day and a half a few hundred miles SW of Guam. I have watched the earthquake site for years and have never seen anything remotely like this- what is happening out there? No tsunamis, and I would guess far enough away not to be bothering Guam but I do wonder if there are any of the really small islands being shaken apart. May had to google earth and see if I can figure it out.

Best I can tell (having looked at Google Earth) there don't seem to be any islands- just an uneasy sea.

Scary indeed. According to [http://www.ga.gov.au/earthquakes/], so far in August there have been this number of earthquakes in the SP - (not including the ones in Micronesia):

Vanuatu 8
Solomon Islands 3
Fiji and surrounding areas 4
PNG 9
Tonga 2

I have no idea how 'normal' this is, though.

Don't know about the other places- but do know that the Micronesia ones are unusual at least over the past few years- so many in such a short period of time. I don't remember seeing more than a couple in the Guam area over the past year of this magnitude. But so far they have been away from land, best I can tell. It certainly could just be a longer cycle than what I have followed.

Two more quakes yesterday to add to the list (in Solomons), as reported in the Solomon Star:

Two strong earthquakes hit near Gizo in the Western Province this morning , triggering a small local tsunami with some reports of damage, police said.

The magnitude 7.2 and 6.5 quakes struck close together around 9:48 p.m. EST and occurred around 55 miles south-southeast of Gizo, the U.S. Geological Survey and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers said.

Perhaps Micheal Critons undersea space craft are trying to escape? There have been several more rather large ones around Guam. Very very strange.....

LOL!

Well- it could be you know.
