Family friendly South Pacific 10 week itinerary

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

We have travelled a bit of the 'tourist' track South Pacific pre kids but we are now looking to revisit it as a family.

We would really like to revisit Rarotonga and Moorea but would like to take on some other places (and equally we are happy to skip these if other opportunities arise).

We would be travelling late Jan/Feb and looking for places that could accommodate our 7,5 & 2yr olds. All are used to travel, eat most things and are pretty easily pleased! So it is more a case of finding places that will 'work' with families (we spent a lot of time on Fijian islands as backpackers that were great but wouldn't be fair on either party to take young kids to!)

So if anybody has a vague itinerary of movement around this area spanning about 10 weeks, I would be very interested in hearing it. Likewise I really don't expect all the legwork done for me but the South Pacific seems so vast, (even having 'done' it!) if anybody can suggest a narrower search with the 'Young family' brief in mind then I am
More than happpy to do the leg work in order to zone in on specifics.

With air travel really restricted in the SP it is difficult to connect the islands. You could look at going from LA to Rarotonga first, from there, there is a once weekly flight to Tahiti. It would be possible to travel on to New Caledonia from Tahiti and then to Fiji and back to LA. I have not traveled these places with young children but there seemed to be lots of families enjoying themselves. Fijians, in particular, welcome little ones - you could have a look at Mana Island Resort - they have a children's club which is quite popular. With regard to Tahiti, I would recommend Huahine over Moorea. Have a look at a place called Rande's Shack and their 2 bedroom house - Huahine has a more laid back vibe than Moorea. Good luck with your planning!

newfie has it pretty much down. via LA your options are Fiji, Rarotonga or Tahiti. Fiji has the best connections.

check out websites for Fiji Airways, Tahitinui and Air Calin and look at their route maps.
Air New Zealand connects to the islands as well but via Auckland as a hub rather than point to point

Out of Fiji, you could also visit Solomon Islands, where village stays are great for children, and definitely not touristy. Honiara, the capital, is only 3 hours by air from Brisbane, Australia, from where you can fly anywhere.
