Female Travller in the Pacific Islands-any recommendations?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello ,

I need to get travelling to move again. I have been considering Australia for Feb.( I would be staying near Melbourne), b/c my best friend is there. However, I've been to Oz before and don't want to stay for my whole time in Melbourne and or Australia, and was therefore wondering about the Pacific islands, Fiji, Indonesia etc. Can anyone recommend places that are safe for lone female travellers, and are also not overly costly to get to from Oz?

Also, I love food, cooking and eating, so I'd love to hear any recommendations about great places to eat.

Thanks so much!

Most of the South Pacific (the exception being mainly PNG cities - all 3 of them) must rank among the safest places on Earth for women and men alike. The only places to watch out for would be dark city streets at night, especially near rowdy pubs/clubs.
Fiji is the cheapest place in this region, both to get to and to travel around.

Indonesia is pretty safe too, and gets LOTS of solo women travelers, but that country is covered on the South-East Asia Islands branch so post there if considering it.
Lots of active female travelers on that forum.
Food is definitely better and more diverse in Indonesia (and the rest of SE Asia) than in the South Pacific, and of course it is MUCH cheaper to travel there.

I agree with Laszlo - the Pacific Islands countries are very good places for women to travel alone. Most use English as an official language.
The only thing to be careful of, as a woman is how you dress outside resort areas, as most Pacific people are very conservative. Most important is not wearing short shorts or bikinis in public places.
