Ferry's between islands in French PolynesiaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
HI, I am travelling to Tahiti and a few of the islands in June and would like to know if it is still possible to get ferrys between the islands or do I have to fly. I am told flights are being encouraged and yet they are expensive. Thanks
There are ferries between Tahiti-Moorea, Bora Bora-Maupiti, Bora Bora-Raiatea, Raiatea-Tahaa, otherwise there are cargo boats. Click on my blog for links to schedules. | 1
you may wanna read my report on my trip in FP. I did one ferry trip from Huahine to Tahiti and for me it was one of the best experiences. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?messageID=13905064 Basically dont rely on Guide books in that since the schedules had been changed recently. Info, even in latest books (I had Tahiti from Stanley's Moon), doesnt correspond with actual times and day of departure. Having said this, the best way is to ask the guy/girl who sits behind the counter. Bear in mind, though, only few of them may speak solid English. Do you want more info, come back to me. jirikoo | 2
Thanks for your reply. I found your blog very helpful to read. I am still undecided to go by ferry or to fly, either way sounds somewhat complicated but I am sure I will work it out. I am needing a ferry between Papeete and Raiatea only one way. I will check out both flights and ferries when I arrive. Many thanks | 3
Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if I am game to go by ferry but yes, it would be a great experience. I am travelling alone and only need a one way trip from Papeete to Raiatea. I have been told it is best to fly and yes, very expensive. Do you know if I need to make flight reservations before I arrive or am I able to get a flight easily if the ferry doesn't work out. Many thanks. | 4
guide books and some people say during the dry season july - august its really busy and have no chance to book a flight or accommodation casualy. I was in march and i had no problem to book anythnin on arrival. Funnily enough, i was speculating all same before i took off if i would safe if i didnt catch up. I eventually ended up having to purchase airfare ticket from Bora Bora to Huahine because nobody had been able to explain to me when the ferry boat was due to depart. In a nutshell: dont rely on the boat | 5
