Ferry to Huahine from Papeete

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,

I am traveling to French Polynesia in mid April 2009 and would like to take the ferry from Papeete to Huahine. From the research I have done, I see that the Aremiti 3 runs from Papeete to Huahine on Mondays and Fridays(?). I have tried emailing them and the email is not valid.

I am wondering if this ferry is still running and what the best way is to contact them and book seats?

Or do I need to book anything at all? Should I just wait until I arrive to book everything? Including ferry, hotel, etc.

Thank you for your insight!!

its still running. i would buy my tickets on the spot. no worries, tons of room in the aremiti, enough to fill cars, trucks and thousands ofpeople

I believe the ferry to Huahine has not been running for a couple of years.

You can see on their web site: http://www.aremiti.pf/ that there is no mention of a ferry to Huahine, only to Moorea.

I met several people last July that were unable to book ferry rides to or from Huahine. Local people may still be able to. 3 years ago, people had no problem. So I wouldn't count on it. Read Silvanocats blog, its very helpful in budget trip planning.

Thanks for the info, just wanted to confirm what seemed to be true! Much appreciated!

This is weird, I thought that I saw another post from you on this topic, was it deleted for some strange reason?

Anyway, I think there may be some confusion between ferries and cargo boats. I refer to ferry boats as ferries (the Aremiti, Moorea Express and in the past, the Ono Ono). There are also cargo boats that go from Tahiti to Huahine. Tahiti Tourisme has now referred to them as ferries on their site. These are the boats that you may not (based on several reports I've heard as JMK mentioned above) be able to get on. Apparently new safety laws have been enacted and some vessel owners have decided not to carry tourists. But here are the cargo boat schedules to Huahine: http://tahiti-tourisme.com/doclinks/Leeward_islands_boat_transportation.pdf
