Fiji, 4 nights (Beachcomber Island/Octupus Resort Waya/Robinson Crusoe)Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I will be arriving in Fiji in about a week and need to book my accomodations. I will be arriving on the 12th and leaving the 16th...I am traveling solo so I want to make sure everything is booked before I get there. Does anyone have suggestions...Beachcomber Island, Octupus Resort on Waya, Robinson Crusoe Island or any others??? I am looking to spend $100 a day but would be willing to go over that for a better experience. I am interested in relaxing on the beach, scuba diving, possibly visiting a village and hiking. Thanks is advance for your help!
If you want to stay up late and drink heavily after your days of relaxing on the beach, scuba diving, visiting a village and hiking, Beachcomber is for you. I am not familiar with the other two, but one less expensive place I recommend is Barefoot Lodge, only because they have manta rays in the drift just in front of the island. An experience you won't get at the other places. Enjoy!!! Wow, what a horribly long link! | 1
I can highly recommend the Octopus Resort for all the things you are looking for. But, they are very popular and may not have anything available on such short notice. Check out their website for prices, their dorm accommodations should be in your price range , although they have raised their prices since I was there in 2006. | 2
Thanks for the advice...I am still deciding between Beachcomber and Octupus...they both have availability...can you tell me a little more about your experience at Octupus? What did you do while you were there...how was the accomodations, food, beach, hiking, drink, etc.??? | 3
When you stayed at Beachcomber...how was the 80 person dorm? | 4
I would recommend you go to Octopus Resort. Cost of accommodation at Octopus Resort in the dorm is F$94.00 per person per night including meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner). Cost of boat transfers is F$90.00 per person each way so return boat transfers will be F$180.00. Regards | 5
The 80 person dorm was gross. I woke up to large people making out by the foot of my bed. With a room of that size, you hear disturbing noises throughout the night. You should get your own bure if going to Beachcomber. I do think a lot of it is who is there when you are. I'm American, but hung out with a cool group of Kiwis because there was a large group of American football players that were obnoxious meatheads the whole time, making the island their own debauchery station. And it is fun. The bar stays open late and you have all sorts of activities and a nice beach to choose from. | 6
Tuckermarie - we (couple in early 60"s) stayed at Octopus for 5 nights in a garden bure. The best part of the stay(besides the great food) was meeting all sorts of people from young backpackers, older singles and couples and some our age. Dining was at several large tables so you got to mingle and, if at all sociable, you could not help but make friends. Not a lot of night life except for listening to the Fijians and their awesome music while enjoying a drink. Days were spent walking the beach, snorkeling in front of the resort, going on the dive boat trips(we snorkeled) they offer, visiting the village for Sunday morning service and relaxing by the pool or water. My husband also took a fairly challenging hike with great views. The staff were awesome and we were sorry to have to leave. We were fortunate to have had 5 days of great weather so cannot say what it might be like if you had to deal with rainy days. We took the Yasawa Flyer out to Waya and the Octopus boat back - the Flyer was much better and not much more. They also pick up and drop off at the various hotels/hostels in the Nadi area. If you need more information PM me. | 7
We are going in July and , sadly, Octopus was booked out. We have instead booked our stay at Oarsmans Bay. Can anyone tell me how the place - ie beach, food, snorkelling etc compares? | 8
Thanks for all the advice...I ended up booking my accomodation with Octopus Reort. It was $68USD per person for the ensuited dorm which is 4 single beds...this includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. The boat tranfer is $56 per person for one way. Octopus Resort has been very accomodating through e-mail as well... | 9
tuckermarie - great to hear you were able to get a booking at Octopus. Would love to get a report on your stay when you return. | 10
I had the same hesitations and didn't regret any minute my choice : Oarman's bay is great, I reckon you won't find better settings in any other of the Yasawas. Food is ok, not mind blowing though, I find in all these resorts they should propose fijian food like lolo, rourou or else.. but they don't, probably because the village gardens are not that productive... | 11
