Fiji - accommodation, urgent advice really needed!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,

I am going to Fiji with a friend this Friday. We are hoping to island hop over 11 days and have booked a Bula pass for the ferry transfers throughout this time. We have also booked the first night in Nadi on arrival at a hotel.

My main question and area of concern is accommodation on the islands. Apparently it is possible to book this on the ferry over - but this all seems rather last minute to me and no guarantee that there would be beds on the islands we would want. We are only looking at hostels/budget rooms

Can someone please advise as to if we need to be booking ahead on some of the islands, or if most backpackers like us usually just book a night in advance or en route?

Thanks so much!

You may have trouble with the more popular places (Octopus, Blue Lagoon, etc.) but elsewhere you should generally be fine to just go a day or two at a time. It's not the peak season, so you have that working in your favour.

If there is a place you know you want to stay, then you may as well book it sooner rather than later. Communication once you're out in the islands can be slow (or completely down at one point in my case).

Pick up a Fiji sim when you arrive in Fiji and call up the resorts of choice. Write down phone numbers before you travel, most are listed on the resort website. Unlikely you will have any issue with space with at this time of the year if it is just two of you and you are willing to stay in a dorm, but best to call ahead to confirm.

Thanks so much for the advice, really appreciated.

I've done my research too and the people we booked the bula pass say they can help us with booking the accommodation when we arrive at the airport at their reservations desk. I hear that South sea and Bounty Island are off the list though due to Cyclone Evan. :(

I guess I just got worried that we wouldn't be able to find rooms/beds on the islands and nights we wanted, but it seems that we can book as we go without too much trouble. Thanks again.
