Fiji accomodation

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Can anyone please give me advise on the most affordable yet decent accomodation in the Fiji islands. Also any trips that are worth doing eg cruises.

You realize, of course, that 'affordable' means different things to different people.

For budget level, stay away from west end resorts. Use guesthouses in small towns etc.

David Stanley's Guide to Fiji will have comprehensive (he has claimed complete) accom listings everywhere.

The most affordable place is probably Caqalai island to the East os Suva wich of offers dorm accommodation at the moment for F$ 38 including 3 meals ( I say "at the moment", because Fiji government will be increasing soon the hotel tax and that will cause a rise in all accommodation rates). The Island is a typical postcard Island, white sandy beach all around, swinging palmtrees and superb snorkelling right from the beach.

If doing cruises watch your luggage....the locals are not friendly. This is a poor country and you need eyes in the back of your head. Be warned.

The travel guides to Fiji (Lonely Planet and Moon Guide) are both fairly up to date in terms of property listings but rates have gone up quite a bit recently due to higher taxes, import duties etc so check rates before booking! Also have a look at www.Fiji4Less.com for (non-party) budget options with self-catering.
