Fiji Advice for solo backpacker

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

As part of my RTW trip i will be heading to Fiji on the 5th of Feb arriving roughly 16:00pm and leaving on the 12th of feb, my flight out is 18:15pm.

The first night i will just stay in Nadi but then want to island hop between the mamanuca and yasawa islands for the next 6 nights.

I want a mix of party and paradise where i can meet people...

Partywise i will stay in Beachcomber...

Paradise is where i need your help....

Having done the research i think Nacula Island seems the most attractive option

The ones ive looked at are Oarsman Bay, Blue Lagoon Beach resort and Safe landing resort

Questions i have:

1/ Would people recommend Nacula Island? and which resort?

2/ If i do 2 nights on Beachcomber and 2 nights on Nacula Island would it be worth doing 2 nights on another island? Say Octopus on Waya Island?

3/ Assume there is the potential for a lot of rain in February, is the chances of better weather increased the further north you go?

4/ Yasawa Flyer - is this the only method of transport to do a island hop? If i did Beachcomber the last 2 nights then i'd want to leave around midday/early afternoon to make sure i had plenty of time to get my flight (18:15), however, looking at the Yasawa flyer timetable, its only once per day and dosent get in to Denarau until 5:45 which means il miss my flight

5/ Should i book anything in advance this time of a year and hat should i book to cater for above?

Sorry for the long post!

Thanks
Dan

  1. Yes. Blue Lagoon is the best.
  2. Sure. Octopus is a good choice.
  3. The Yasawas are relatively dry.
  4. It's the main method. Some of the closer islands have their own boats (Octopus does) that'll get you back to the mainland earlier (unless there are rough seas).
  5. Doesn't hurt to book ahead. Blue Lagoon & Octopus are always busy.

Thanks tch7

So you think to do 3 of the islands (2 nights each) isnt too rushed?

2

Yeah, I think 2 islands might be ideal. Just a tip: my wife and her sister went to both Blue Lagoon and Octopus and
liked the Octopus much better for the atmosphere. They said Blue Lagoon was OK for honeymooners but a bit quiet
and the island is dry lowland. (Also felt the snorkelling was better at Octopus.)
