Fiji for under 25s

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi guys,

I know this is going to be a super generalised question, but Ive been trying to research and there is just so much to wade through on the internet, so I thought coming here might narrow things down a bit.

We are three early-mid 20 somethings looking to spend a week in Fiji. We are basically trying to work out what part of Fiji would be best for us to stay for what we are looking for, as I know Fiji is very popular with couples, and we didnt want to end up in an area where there was no nightlife.

We would basically like to be somewhere that is popular with young people, has some nightlife, but also has opportunities for good snorkelling/scuba diving, and beautiful beaches. I know that sounds obvious, but I know from my experience in Thailand that a beautiful beach in a notoriously party-centric area can rapidly become foul and disgusting.

We are relatively adventurous too, so if there are any "must see/do" experiences you could recommend as well, we would be really happy!

Hey I'm no help here but also wondering the same thing - I'm an 18 year old girl travelling on my own so I'm after any island in Australasia (not restricted to Fiji) that might be good for low budget hostels with lots of sociable people :) Not necessarily a crazy party town or anything like that, just a chilled out place for backpackers :) So will be keeping an eye on this thread

Hey,

Im planning a trip to Fiji in April 2012 for about a week on my way from Canada to Auckland. I've been doing a bunch of research through books - Lonely Planet's South pacific guide helped me decide which island and gave me more info - and on the internet.

From what I've found Fiji isnt as cheap as you might think - but its worth it. Theres lots of small islands to go to but theyre expensive to get to - at least some are. Im going to spend a night in Nadi (where their international airport is) then visiting Beachcomber island which is known to be the Party centre of the pacific. Well at least it was. its calmed down a bit - which is ok for me since im a "off the beaten track" type traveler - but its still a young hangout spot with great live music, chilled out people, beaches, great snorkelling and good prices. I've also heard the Yassewas are a great spot and you can get there along a pretty good backpacker boat with http://www.awesomefiji.com/ they also run pretty good tours hitting a lot of great islands for different time lengths.

I'm also going to be doing some shark diving in Pacific Harbor - hostels there seem limited though.

Hope it helps.

J

Head for the Yasawas. Full of young backpackers. Mostly Brits on a leg of their round the world, Aussie/NZ schoolies, or North Americans on their way to/from Oz/NZ. Most islands have a couple resorts/hostels, and one will cater to the young crowd. Like a lot of places it really depends on the crowd that week, but this is not Thailand, there are no full moon parties..

As per the sage advice above follow the crowds and Be Happy!

The Good News is that foul beaches are a rarity in the South Pacific-the Bad News is that you're on the well trodden tourist track.
