Fiji from Auckland?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello everyone!

I'm travelling to New Zealand in September and October, and recently had a crazy notion to go via Fiji on the way home. (My friend went there recently - I saw the photos - I'm hooked). I've looked into "multi-stop" flights (ie London-Auckland-Fiji-London) but they are ridiculously expensive. (The cheapest direct flights from London to Auckland are £714, but including Fiji bumps it up to well over £2000 at the absolute lowest). I was just wondering if anyone here knows if it's possible to just change my flight when I get out to NZ and take a different one to Fiji and then fly back from there? Can you redirect a flight when you arrive somewhere? Is Fiji even realistically on the way back to London from Auckland?! (I can't work it out from the map, seeing as i'm not sure which way around the world the planes usually go!!) Sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well; I actually have no idea if what I'm talking about is even remotely feasible so I'm just asking around on the offchance!

Anyway, if you or anyone you know has managed to do this or something similar, then please let me know. I'm not an inexperienced traveller at all, but I've always had my flights booked and confirmed before I leave in the past so I don't want to consider this if it's a total impossibility.

Thank you for your help!

Robyn xx

Hello, sorry, I wanted to edit this message but I couldn't so I'm just replying to it instead; I put it on this board rather than the specific Fiji one because I meant to say, if I can't get to Fiji, then any of the Pacific Islands really would make me happy!! The only reason I was thinking of Fiji in particular was because that was where my friend went. So, if you have any response to this in relation to any of the Pacific islands, then I would be very grateful. Thankyou!!

Air NZ flies from London to Auckland via LA and various Pacific islands, including Fiji - also Tahiti, Rarotonga, Tonga and Samoa.

Fares start at £705 + £100 per Pacific island stopover.

Details here.

Korean Air offers this from Frankfurt for about 1500 Euro, can't be much more from London.

Just talked to an English man, he has an around the world ticket with qantas for 1200 pounds, valid 1 year, 20 stops in 4 continents included (so was New Zealand and Fiji)

You could also use "Travel Overland" (google for it) - sometimes they have incredible cheap offers.

Alternatively, get a cheap return flight on Virgin Pacific Blue from NZ or...

buy a Great Escapade ticket - sold by Air New Zealand or UK travel agents. 29000 miles allowed, with almost unlimited stopovers on routes flown by Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic, Silk Air and Singapore Airlines.

Prices start at about 920 pounds sterling plus tax.

eg.

LONDON - MUMBAI - SINGAPORE - BRISBANE - AUCKLAND - FIJI - COOK ISLANDS - LA - LONDON

would probably be around 29000 miles (you can buy extra blocks of 1500 miles for US$100 up to a max of 4500, ie total 33500).
