Fiji in January 2010

I know it's still a long way off, but I've just booked a 6-day stop over in Fiji as part of a 6-week trip to NZ next January. I realize it is not the best time of year, but am hoping we won't get rained upon the entire time. It's cyclone season too, right? Can anyone recommend any place to go where we might have a drier time of it - not too far from Nadi. Any recommendations for accommodation are also heartily welcome. What's the best way to travel between Nadi and another island, boat or plane? Nothing 5-star, but not backpacker accommodation either. Ideally a small guesthouse, near the beach. We're also not into ONLY a beach / diving experience. We're also keen on small fishing villages, walking in the jungle, soaking up a bit of atmosphere before heading back to a cold European winter.
